Campaign: Princes of the Apocalypse

Pangur Ban is a tabaxi explorer whose curiosity compels her to travel the world, following in the footsteps of the famed tabaxi explorer Payam Kubo, her great aunt. Pangur Ban now journeys Faerun in honor of Payam Kubo's memory, seeking to unravel the mysteries surrounding the strange map that her great aunt had discovered just prior to the mysterious sickness that had felled her.

Description[]

Tall and lithe as a heiroglyph come to life, the cat-like humanoid Pangur Ban stands a full seven feet tall when fully stretched out. Aware of her imposing height, she often hides her true stature by hunching low in her frumpy, tattered robes.

Her fur is a pale mauve with black stripes running sideways from snout to tail, a tail half as long as she is tall. Her violet eyes are often vibrant with curiosity, always looking for the next trinket or flight of fancy to capture her attention.

She wears an overstuffed backpack and side bag. Knick-knacks of all shapes and sizes dangle from the outside of her backpack and bag, like tackle for a fisherman.

Personality[]

Pangur Ban is passionate about her interests, although what interests her can change at any given moment. Often she will find herself suddenly enraptured by one of the numerous knick-knacks adorning her clothing and satchel, pawing and playing at it until she grows bored and her attention is drawn elsewhere. Each item carries significant sentimental value to the tabaxi cleric, and woe be unto anyone who dares to touch her trinkets without permission.

History[]

Content to ply her curiosity for knowledge at home, Pangur Ban devoted herself to the teachings of the Cat Lord. Though anxious to see the world, she knew that her presence was expected at home in Khult. Everything changed with the sudden, mysterious sickness of her great-aunt Payam Kubo, a venerated explorer who had trekked beyond the borders of the jungle to bring back news of the outside world. Payam Kubo had only just recently stumbled upon a map of mysterious importance that pointed to a place called the Sumber Hills. Upon her deathbed, Payam Kubo urged Pangur Ban to carry on in her stead. "I see the flame of curiosity in you, my sweet Pangur Ban. Kindle it, child. Keep it warm."

She would always remember the rasp of Payam Kubo's tongue upon her forepaw. It was the last time Pangur Ban saw her great-aunt alive.

She left the next day to embark upon the three week journey to Waterdeep. From there the road would take her north, through Amphail, to the village of Red Larch. It was here, curled up in front of the fireplace of the Swinging Sword Inn, that her adventure would truly begin.

Trivia[]

The character of Pangur Ban was inspired by a 9th century poem written by an Irish monk, for his pet cat.
